After Passion Movie Review

For those of you who have never ever heard of the 'After' series before, I deeply recommend you to read the following review of its film adaptation 'After Passion', which is named after the first book.

'After Passion' by author Anna Todd and director Jenny Gage

Regarding the fact that I have read both the 'After' series plus the three following novels 'Before', 'Nothing More' and 'Nothing less' by author Anna Todd about five times each, I was quite sceptical about Hardin and Tessa's revolutionary love story being filmed. Their romance has meant a lot to me from when it first started for it felt pretty real but dreamlike at the same time. So, I was kind of worried about the producers ruining my fantasy world, in which Hessa lived together happily ever after.

Would their passionate, unconditional love be reflected the way it is in the books? Would both main characters be perfect and imperfect at the same time? And last but not least, would Hardin and Tessa be as real as Anna Todd created them?

emotional scene by the lake

The first of four novels of the 'After' series is about college freshman Tessa Young, who feels like she has her whole life planned out already. Trying to perform well at school and to not get distracted by any partying, she meets badboy Hardin Scott who seemingly thinks about nothing else than that. Somehow, their indispensable differences make them fall in love with each other and explore emotions of which they did not even know they existed. Unfortunately, their romance is overshadowed by a big lie...

The movie starts off with young, naive Tessa moving into college with the help of her mom and her longtime boyfriend Noah which we know she has never slept with. She quickly meets her roommate Steph who, after a few minutes, introduces her to Hardin. From this very first moment, the viewer notices some sort of attraction between Hessa, which soon turns into a love affair. Talking about the love scenes that are shown in the movie, I believe that director Jenny Gage has done pretty great work on that as they appear both auhentic and captivating. Just how Tessa looks at Hardin telling him that nothing could ever change the way she feels about him, or how our former badboy constantly watches his girl in secret, the love between those two is not deniable, neither in the sex scenes nor when they ignore each other in the beginning.

When highschool boy and Tessa's actual boyfriend Noah and her mother find out about the affair and she is left with a breakup and no financial aid, Hardin is there to help her and finds an appartment in which they both can live together. Even though their relationship has come really far in only a short amount of time, Hardin's group of friends, which includes his former affair Molly aswell as Steph, her girlfriend Tristan, lover boy Zed and the mysterious, dangerous looking Jace, does not know anything about what has happened between Hessa. As the movie progresses, we find out that Jace, Molly and Hardin had made a bet if Hardin would make Tessa fall in love with him and cold heartedly leave her afterwards. In my opinion, the moment when Tessa finds out about what has been going on in an old bar does indeed appear real, but is not as dramatic as it is described in the book. Although we clearly notice the pain Tessa must feel while being abased in front of her lover's group of friends, I have to say that Hardin's reaction isn't comparable to the actual one in the book. This leads me to my next point.

Watching Tessa run away from him, seeing her world collide in only a few seconds, her heart tear into a million little pieces, Hardin does not collapse in any way. In my opinion, that loud boy with his tempered, jealous and even aggressive character does not appear the way he is being presented in the books at all. While the movie shows Tessa in her careful, emotional and loving self, I feel like Hardin's emotions are being immensely attenuated. Here, he almost seems like a shy, anxious guy who he is clearly not. This way, it is hard for the audience to understand the stormy, intense relationship aswell as the deep love that there is between Tessa and Hardin.

if 'After Passion' is successful, there might be a second movie

To sum up, I can say that I truly loved the movie, even though its content is kind of different from the book. Nevertheless, I would have loved Hardin to be as authentic and real as he is in the 'After' series for Hessa's relationship shows that it is just fine aswell as normal to be imperfect as a couple, as long as you love each other.

All that is left to do for us now is to hope that there will be another 'After' movie, in which we can see the Hardin Scott we love. Dear Anna Todd, please make us happy!

So then ...

It's been blogged, babe!

I'll see you soon ♥
